Deep Hole Drilling

PERMAT supplies deep hole drilling machines and carbide-tipped deep hole drilling tools.

Other benefits include:
High penetration rates
Bore tolerance of within IT 6 - IT 9
Good bore geometry
Good surface finish
Small run outs.

Applications

Deep hole drilling has proved cost effective in a range of different automotive applications.

As a modern method of machining it is not limited to producing long hole bores, but is also widely used in producing short bores where high levels of precision are required. Advantages include that accurate holes can be produced in one operation, without reaming.

Permat-supplied machines available include the following:

Horizontal Deep Hole Drilling Machine Type BH 50-3000-CNC

This machine offer the capability for counter-rotation of components and has tool steady rests.

It is designed for:
gun drilling
gun boring
skiving
roller burnishing

Swarf removal is via swarf car or automatic chip conveyor, and the swarfs are separated from oil by a centrifuge.

Tool monitoring is via feed power; and coolant monitoring is via pressure sensor.

Deep hole drilling, twist drilling, deburring and thread cutting of gear shafts

NAGEL, Permat's parent company, has built a fully automatic transfer line for the machining of holes in gear shafts.

As a response to customer needs, it built a transfer line in which it integrated not only deep hole drilling but also the twist drilling of cross lubrication holes and the deburring of the cross holes at the entry to the deep hole drilled central hole. Thread cutting is done at another station.

Finally, the holes are rinsed, i.e. the remaining chips are washed out and the remaining cooling lubricant is blown off. The cycle time to be achieved required the use of four machining spindles per station.

At the machine was designed for fully automatic, unattended operation, an automation element (EPU), i.e. a workpiece pallet reloading system, was integrated.

The workpieces are supplied and removed by means of a pallet system. The loading of the individual stations is carried out by an H-gantry loading system with four clamping systems each, i.e. four pieces are always transported simultaneously. When the pieces are ready for machining they are collected from the automation element returned to it when the machining process is finished.

Pieces can be taken from an SPC-store for inspection in accordance with the relevant specification and the tools are constantly monitored by tool monitoring systems. The system is also environmentally friendly and has an exhaust system to remove oil mist.

The machine is operated by using the Siemens 810D CNC control system and remote diagnostics and checking is facilitated via a tele-service from our plant.

Also note that it uses a newly-developed process of honing/deburring the cross holes. This means the generated burrs produced at the entry to the central hole can be safely removed.

The transfer line's capacity is 133 pieces an hour with zero defects.
